In the doctor device, the material to be applied is transferred to the web goods by an applicator roll, the thickness of the application being determined by a press nip formed between the applicator roll and a further roll. Upstream of the narrowest point of the press nip, there is disposed a jet deflector 8, which is generally designed as a sheet-shaped or shell-shaped element and projects, with an only slightly rounded tip, into the press nip, as far as the vicinity of the narrowest point thereof. In the process, together with the applicator roll, it forms a nip of constant or continuously decreasing thickness and preferably also, together with the counter-roll, a converging nip towards the narrowest point of the press nip.
