NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystal compound expressed by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl; m and n are 1 or 2; Q* is optically active alkyl). EXAMPLE:4-[(S)-2-Methylbutyloxycarbonyl]phenyl 4-dodecanoyloxybenzoate. USE:Useful as one component of liquid crystal compositions, individually colorless, industrially and readily producible and having improved chemical stability to light. The drop of melting point is observed in a composition and utilization at room temperature can be carried out. The speed of response is very high and the compound is very effective as optical switching elements for display. PREPARATION:An acid chloride expressed by formula II is reacted with a phenolic derivative expressed by formula III in the presence of a basic substance, e.g. pyridine, etc., to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
