The device, which is in particular applicable to handling poles of machines for handling nuclear fuel assemblies, makes it possible to check the verticality of the pole when the latter is in the downwards stretched position. It comprises a receptacle 38 having a cavity which flares out towards the top, in the shape of an inverted pyramid with steps, means for conveying the machine to a location such that the tip for support of the pole by the machine is vertically in line with the receptacle, and means 32 for measuring the position of the pole with respect to the machine when it is bearing on the receptacle. <IMAGE>
