PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of a recording layer by the gaseous components taken by the 1st protective layer from a substrate by forming a thin film layer of metal between the 1st protective layer and recording layer to constitute a photomagnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The photomagnetic recording medium is constituted by forming the 1st protective layer 6 consisting of a dielectric material, a thin metallic film layer 7, the recording layer 8 consisting of an amorphous alloy magnetic material having the axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicular to the film plane and the 2nd protective layer 9 consisting of a metal or dielectric material in this order on a substrate 5. A material which has a getter effect to easily take in the gaseous components, for example, Ti is selected as the thin metallic film material 7 to be formed between the 1st protective layer 6 and the recording layer 8. Since the thin metallic film has the effect of absorbing the gaseous components taken in by the 1st protective layer 6 from the substrate 5, the deterioration of the recording layer by such gaseous components is prevented and the magnetooptic characteristic are improved.
