In a nuclear reactor having a primary coolant circuit comprising a plurality of legs, and comprising a plurality of intermediate coolant circuits (A, B, C) assigned to the legs, for afterheat removal and for the purpose of component cooling, in addition to an afterheat cooler (4) each intermediate coolant circuit contains at least one further cooler (3) for component cooling. At least two of the intermediate coolant circuits (A, B, C) are intermeshed via blockable lines (14, 15). The invention is particularly suitable for pressurised water reactors, and facilitates better matching of the pump capacity to be installed to the actual water coolant requirement. <IMAGE>
