PURPOSE:To separate and remove coloring substances existing in colored amino acid and to obtain decolored amino acid in high yield and productivity, by carrying out the decoloration treatment with a highly porous polymer resin. CONSTITUTION:A colored amino acid is dissolved at 0.5-2.0pH, preferably 1.0-1.8pH and decolored with a nonpolar highly porous resin having styrene- divinylbenzene as a skeleton. For example, a nonpolar highly porous polymer resin is filled in a column, an aqueous solution containing colored amino acid is introduced into the column and a proper elution solvent is poured into the column to obtain decolored amino acid. The concentration of the aqueous solution is maintained below the solubility level of the amino acid and is higher the better provided that there occurs no precipitation of the acid in the decoloration column. The amount of the resin used in the above process is preferably about 0.2-5pts. per 1pt. of the aqueous solution having an amino acid concentration of about 5-15%.
