An inlet valve (4) and an exhaust valve (13) with disc (5, 15) and stem (3, 12) for spark ignition (and diesel) engines are described and shown. In order to increase the swirling of the mixture and to achieve a high volumetric efficiency for a short valve stroke, the known multiple arrangement of inlet valves per cylinder is replaced by a single inlet valve (4), which can be arranged centrally on the cylinder head and the disc diameter of which is approximately 75% of the combustion chamber diameter. At the same time the valve stem (3) is of hollow design, so that the stem (12) of the exhaust valve can be guided concentrically in the hollow space (21), the smaller disc (15) of the exhaust valve or its orifice being arranged concentrically in the inlet valve disc (5). Figure 2 shows the closed position of both valves. The double valve according to the invention can also be used for smaller cylinder diameters, in which only a single inlet valve has hitherto been possible owing to lack of space. <IMAGE>
