PURPOSE:The catalytic reaction of a specific isoamylene with a phenol is carried out in the presence of an inorganic solid acid catalyst to produce t-amylphenol of high purity selectively in high hield economically with repeated use of the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Cyclopentene in the C5 fraction remaining after isoprene extrac tion is hydrogenated to prepare a C5 fraction containing isoamylene. The frac tion is allowed to react with a phenol in the presence of an inorganic solid acid catalyst such as active clay at 30-120 deg.C and 1-10kg/cm<2> for 1-7 hours. After the completion the reaction, the mixture is filtered, almost part of the unreacting C5 fraction is removed and the resultant concentrate is distilled to obtain p-tert.-amylhenol and 2,4-di-tert.-amylphenol. EFFECT:Since the inorganic solid acid is usable repeatedly, industrial waste is not formed in a large amount. USE:Starting substance for color coupler in photography, resin additives and intermediate of oil-soluble dye and lubricant additives.
