PURPOSE:An alcoholamine such as monoethanolamine is added to hydrocarbon oil containing methylnaphthalene and the mixture is distilled to separate methylnaphthalene of high purity of reduced heterocyclic content from the azeotropic fraction. CONSTITUTION:In the fractionation distillation of coal tar or petroleum hydrocarbon oil, an alcoholamine such as monoethanolamine, butanolamine, propanolamine, or isopropanolamine is added to the fraction boiling at 200-300 deg.C and containing methylnaphthalene in an amount of about 4 or more times that of the methylnaphthalene and the methylanphthalene is removed. EFFECT:Solvent, dye carrier, thermal medium. A synthetic intermediate of 2,6- naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid used as a monomer of polyester of high heat resistance and high tensile strength.
