PURPOSE:An aqueous serine solution containing inorganic salt contaminants and/or isoserine is subjected to column chromatography filled with a cation- exchanger and developed with water to recover serine economically in high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous serine solution containing inorganic salt contaminants and/or isoserine is subjected to column chromatography filled with a cation-exchanger selected from the group consisting of metal salt type strong-acid cation exchangers, metal salt type weak acid cation exchangers and H-type weak acid cation exchangers and developed with water. The serine fractions eluted are collected. The aqueous serine solution is obtained, e.g. by reaction of aziridine-2-carboxylic acid or its derivative of the formula (Y is -CO2H, -CONH2) with an alkalic metal hydroxide and/or oxoacid followed by neutralization.
