PURPOSE:To obtain a photomagnetic recording medium which has good vertical anisotropy, prevents the precipitation of phases except a magnetoplumbite type hexagonal ferrite and has excellent magnetic characteristics by providing a layer having the magnetoplumbite structure as an underlying epitaxial layer. CONSTITUTION:An underlying film 11, the underlying epitaxial layer 13 and a magnetic layer 13 are successively laminated on a substrate 11. The magnetic layer 17 consists of the magnetoplumbite type hexagonal ferrite. The underlying epitaxial layer 15 consists of the thin oxide film having the magnetoplumbite type structure expressed by MIO.6MII2O3 (where, MI: Ba, Sr, Pb, MII: Al, Ga). The magnetic layer which has the good orientation and prevents the generation of the phases except the magnetoplumbite type hexagonal ferrite is formed by epitaxially growing the magnetoplumbite type hexagonal ferrite on the underlying epitaxial layer 15.
