The invention provides octahydro-2-( omega -mercaptoalkanoyl)-1H-isoindole-1-carboxylic acids and esters having the formula <CHEM> wherein R is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R1 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or benzyl, R2 is hydrogen or R3-CO- (wherein R3 is lower alkyl, heteroaryl containing 4 to 9 carbon atoms and one or two nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atoms, phenyl or substituted phenyl having one or two substituents selected from fluorine, chlorine, bromine, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy), n is 0 or 1, and X is two hydrogen atoms or one oxygen atom, wherein lower alkyl and lower alkoxy include straight or branched groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof when R is hydrogen and/or when R3 is heteroaryl containing 1 or 2 nitrogen atoms. The acids and esters, and their salts, are useful as antihypertensive agents. |
