NEW MATERIAL:The tetrahydrophthalimide derivative of formula I (R is H, alkyl or phenyl). EXAMPLE:2-(4-Chloro-5-ethynyl-2-fluorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-is oindole-1,3- dione. USE:Herbicide having herbicidal effect against gramineous weeds and giving no serious phytotoxicity to main crops such as corn, wheat, rice soybean, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting 2-(5- bromo-4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-isoindole-1,3-dione with an acetylene derivative of formula II in a solvent in the presence of a dehydrohalogenation agent and a catalyst.
