A process for heating sewage sludge is described. For this purpose, the sewage sludge is conveyed a plurality of times through a heat exchanger and conducted in a separate circulation with just the heat exchanger. As soon as the sewage sludge has achieved the respective preset sludge temperature, it is fed to the next treatment stage.
