A container has a base surface which receives a load and adjoining which there are in each case two side and end walls running plane-parallel to one another. The side and end walls surround an interior which receives the load. They are connected to one another by a covering surface which terminates the interior. In order that the container can be loaded in a simple and inexpensive manner with any type of product whose dimensions allow loading in a container, at least one of the two side walls is connected releasably to the base surface and the end walls. It is attached to at least one part of the covering surface and, together with the covering surface, is mounted so as to be displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the base surface beyond at least one of the end walls. In order to be able to load the container with products from above over its entire length and width, the covering surface can be firmly connected to one of the two side walls. In order to be able to prepare the container very quickly for loading and in order to achieve a relatively lightweight construction of the container, the covering surface can be subdivided into two parts and in each case one of the two parts can be firmly connected in each case to a side wall.
