The machine sorts items such as eggs, vegetables or fruit according to weight, having one or more weighing mechanisms with an item support on one arm and a counterweight on the other, the arms being coupled via a bearing. Magnets (26,27) on the frame and one arm are so mounted that they can move along each other with like poles facing during the tilting movement caused by the weighing operation. The weighing arms can be at an obtuse angle to each other and one magnet can be mounted on the counterweight arm.
