A numerically controlled glass plate grinding machine has strands (9) fitted with the strands, linearly in two mutually perpendicular directions. The linear motion is numerically controlled so that the grinding discs (7) of the grinding heads (5) move along the peripheral edges of the glass plates (8), which are held on the stands (9), to grind the plate edges. Each grinding head (5) is held on the linear motion drive such that it can rotate about an axis which passes through a grinding point (A) on the grinding disc (7) to the glassplate (8). The grinding heads are suspended from the linear motion drive so that they can be moved parallel to a straight line connecting the grinding point (A) with the centre of rotation of the grinding disc (7). Drives are provided for rotating the grinding heads (5) about the axes and for moving the grinding heads individually and independently parallel to the straight line. The numerical controller acts on the rotational drive such that the normal to the grinding point (A) is aligned with the straight line.
