PURPOSE:To obtain a high polymer having good long-term stability and useful as a base for pharmaceutical preparations, by treating a specified high polymer with water to remove water-soluble, low-molecular compds. CONSTITUTION:An in-vivo decomposition type high polymer contg. at least 0.01mol (in terms of monobasic acid) of water-soluble, low-molecular compds. per 100g of the polymer is dissolved in an easily water-soluble org. solvent such as acetone in a quantity of 3-20 times (W/V) that of said product to obtain a soln. The soln. is poured into a large excess of water and the mixture is stirred at 0-90 deg.C to obtain an in-vivo decomposition type high (co)polymer which is composed of 50-100mol% of lactic acid and 50-0mol% of glycolic acid, contains less than 0.01mol (in terms of monobasic acid) of the water-soluble, low-molecular compds. per 100g of the polymer and has a weight-average MW of 2,000-50,000 and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05-0.5dl/g in a 0.5wt% chloroform soln.
