PURPOSE:To prevent the production of a strain in a core by putting a plurality of quartz glass rods having a glass composition for cores in a glass pipe having a lower m.p. than the glass rods and by melting and uniting them by heating from one end to the other end while turning them on the axis of the glass pipe. CONSTITUTION:A quartz preform rod for a monocore fiber obtd. by CVD, VAD or other method is heated and drawn to form a plurality of glass rods 1 having a glass composition 2 for cores. The rods 1 are put in a glass pipe 4 made of Vycor glass having a lower m.p. than the glass rods 1. The glass pipe 4 and the glass rods 1 are then turned on the axis of the pipe 4, and they are melted and united by heating from one end to the other end with a burner, an electric furnace or the like to obtain a base material 5 for a multicore fiber. |
