PURPOSE:To considerably reduce electric power consumption by lighting up a back light only at the necessary points according to a display image. CONSTITUTION:The part on the left side of a polarizing film 18 is a luminous panel. Stripped transparent electrodes 6 consisting of ITO (Indium-Tin-Oxide), etc. are formed on the surface of a glass substrate 5 and a phosphor 7 and a protective film 8 consisting of MgO, etc., are further formed on the surface thereof. On the other hand, a metallic conductive film 12 consisting of Al, etc., a protective film 11 consisting of SiO2, etc., and a protective film 8a consisting of MgO, etc., are formed on the surface of a glass substrate 5a pro vided to face the substrate 5. The space formed of two sheets of the glass substrate 5 and 5a is segmented to a prescribed shape and size by a spacer 10. An electric discharge gas 9 is sealed into the respective spaces. The sealed gases 9 discharge electricity between the electrodes if a voltage is impressed between the selected transparent electrodes 6 and the film 12. Then the phosphors 7 on the transparent electrodes 6 emit light independently. |
