<p>The X-ray laser exploits the violent collapse of a bubble (11) in liquid (9) to produce an intense concentration of energy, as a piston (1) is compressed violently into a cylinder (2). X-rays from this source are used to produce a population inversion within the bubble wall. This can then give rise to X-ray laser emission approximately parallel to the bubble wall, through a window (12).</p> |
