A process for producing a fatty acid from a lower alkyl ester thereof by hydrolyzing the ester in the presence of an acid catalyst, while adding water continuously from outside the system and continuously distilling the resulting lower alcohol and unreacted water out of the system so that water does not separate from the reaction mixture to form a distinct aqueous phase.
