PURPOSE:To obtain the titled silicon nitride whiskers contg. no granular silicon nitride in good yield by mixing iron (a compd.) and silicon dioxide (a material contg. silicon dioxide) into the powder of amorphous silicon nitride in a specified weight ratio and baking the mixture in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The powder of amorphous silicon nitride is obtained for example, by allowing silicon tetrahalide to react with ammonia in a liq. or a gaseous phase and heating the reaction product and 100pts.wt. powder (A), 0.05-10pts.wt. iron and/or an iron compd. (e.g., iron oxide) (B), expressed in terms of iron, and 0.05-10pts.wt. silicon dioxide and/or a material contg. silicon dioxide (C), expressed in terms of silicon dioxide, are mixed by using a ball mill, etc. Then the mixture is baked at about 1,500 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere (e.g., nitrogen and argon) and the desired silicon nitride whiskers can be obtained in a short time.
