PURPOSE:To detect previously the corrosion of a coating damage part of a metallic material which is used in a solution containing an electrolyte such as sea water by detecting the coating damage part speedily without contacting. CONSTITUTION:Alternate or direct current electrolyzation is carried out between an electrode for the electrolyzation which is provided to a sensor and the coated metallic material as a body to be measured. A figure indicates the distance X from the coating damage part on its lateral axis and the potential generated in the solution on its longitudinal axis, and DELTAphi1<DELTAphi2, where DELTAphi1 and DELTAphi2 are potential differences measured when the sensor 9 is at a position B distant from the coating damage part and when the sensor is at a short-distance position A. Namely, the potential difference is smaller and smaller as the sensor and coating damage part are closer and closer to each other.
