PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance containing no tar by-products, no chlorine, no maleic acid as by-product, etc., by reacting a mixture of an alkene polymer and maleic anhydride with naphthalene or its derivative. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of an alkene polymer (e.g., polybutene) and maleic anhydride is reacted with <=500wt% (preferably 5-200wt%) based on total amount of the mixture of naphthalene or its derivative (e.g., methylnaphthalene or dimethylnaphthalene) at 150-300 deg.C (preferably 160-230 deg.C) for 8-20hr to give the titled substance. A formed alkneylsuccinic anhydirde is reacted with an amine (e.g., alkylenepolyamine) to give an additive for a lubricating oil to form an improved lubricating oil composition having improved sludge dispersibility, not to corroding metals which are brought into contact with the composition. EFFECT:Formation of tar by-products and decomposition of maleic anhydride can be suppressed by using naphthalene. |
