PURPOSE:To prevent a drop of a contrast by cutting an unnecessary scattered beam, by providing an electrode having slits of the horizontal direction by the same number as the number of vertical deflecting stages, on the front of a line cathode. CONSTITUTION:In an effective vertical scanning period, an electron is emitted in a 16H period each successively toward the lower line cathode 520 from the upper line cathode 52a. The emitted electron can pass through only a slit whose upper and lower electrodes have both a high potential, of the slits made by a beam cut electrode, and cannot pass through other slit. The electron beam passes through 120 pieces of slits which have been arranged in the vertical direction as a whole by eight pieces of beam cut electrodes 53a-53h, in a 2H period each successively toward the lower part from the upper part. The beam which has passed through the beam cut electrode 53 is modulated in accordance with a video signal by a beam flow control electrode 54, also deflected to six stages in the horizontal direction, and two stages in the vertical direction, and an image is displayed as a whole.
