Mercapto acyl-carnitines of formula (CH3)3N+-CH2.CH.(OR). CH2COOR1X- (I) are new. X is a pharmaceutically acceptable halide ion, esp. chloride. R is the mercaptoacyl residue of satd. 2-10C mercaptoacid. R1 is straight or branched 1-5C alkyl. (I) is prepd. e.g. by reacting a carnitine ester HCl with a haloacyl chloride, then the prod. is treated with an alkali metal sulfide. (I) are useful as mucolytic agents and for treatment of respiratory disorders etc.
