An agent which, mixed with water or cellulose powder or paper, in particular waste paper, gives a shapeable, hardening dough. This can be used for artistic purposes, in model building, for toys or generally for various purposes. In order to produce this dough, the papers or cellulose powder with water and the novel agent are converted into a shapeable material. The articles shaped from the material harden after evaporation of the water. Thanks to its high strength, the hard, dry material can easily be machined and, as a consequence of its fine-pore structure, has low density. The agent contains primarily cellulose ethers and/or starch ethers, optionally with addition of specific binders. It can also be mixed with cellulose powder or paper powder before stirring with water.
