Shock absorbing device on a body, especially an impact absorbing device on a motor vehicle, with a cylinder (1) which is open on one side and in which is displaceably accommodated a tubular piston (2) which is open on one side. A separating piston (5) is displaceably arranged inside the tubular piston (2) and encloses a volume of gas between itself and the floor of the tubular piston (2) and a liquid between itself and the floor of the cylinder (1). A spring-loaded control valve is inserted into the internal open end of the tubular piston (2), increases the size of a transfer cross-section in the control valve as the load exerted by the shock increases and reduces the said cross-section as the load decreases. By these means, a stream of liquid which is adapted to the load exerted by the shock in each case passes through the control valve to absorb the energy. <IMAGE>
