PURPOSE:To obtain a polycondensate excellent in color tone and useful as an engineering plastic, by transesterifying a dihydroxyaromatic compound with a diallyl carbonate and an alkyl aromatic dicarboxylate in a molten state in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A dihydric aromatic compound (a) is transesterified with diallyl carbonate (b) and an alkyl aromatic dicarboxylate (c) in a molten state in the presence of a catalyst. Examples of components (a) include bisphenol A and bisphenol F, of which the former is preferable. Examples of components (b) include diphenyl carbonate and ditolyl carbonate, and the former is preferable. Examples of components (c) which can be preferably used include dimethyl terephthalate and/or dimethyl isophthalate. As the catalysts, usual transesterification catalysts such as alkali metals and their hydroxides an carbonates can be used.
