PURPOSE:To maintain the differential pressure at normal level automatically by providing first valve for feeding inert gas to an air electrode upon stoppage or start of power generation and second valve for feeding the inert gas passed through the air electrode to a fuel electrode. CONSTITUTION:Fuel cell body 4 is contained in a housing 5 filled with inert gas to feed air from a source 7 to an air electrode 2 while fuel from a source 8 to a fuel electrode 3 and inert gas through a regulation valve 9 to the housing 5. Furthermore, a valve 18 for feeding inert gas through an outlet of housing 5 to the air electrode 2 and a valve 19 for feeding the inert gas passed through the air electrode 2 to the fuel electrode 3 are provided. Said valves 18, 19 are opened upon stoppage or start of power generation to flow the inert gas through housing 5-air electrode 2-fuel electrode 3 thus to purge the residual reaction gas. In such a manner, the differential pressure between the air electrode 2 and the fuel electrode 3 and between the housing 5 and the air electrode 2 can be maintained at normal level automatically. |
