PURPOSE:To attain a large capacity and a high-speed access with high resistance to vibrations and impact and furthermore to reduce the off-track degree due to the temperature change for a magnetic memory device, by intersecting the seeking direction of a head carriage orthogonally with the longitudinal direction of a main frame. CONSTITUTION:A linear guide shaft 2 is fixed in the direction intersecting orthogonally with the longitudinal direction of the main frame 1, and a head carrriage 3 containing a bearing 4 is sought along the shaft 2 by a voice coil motor 5. A magnetic head 6 is fixed to a head block 7, and the block 7 is fixed to the carriage 3. The span of the carriage 3 and the length of a voice coil 8 can be increased. This improves the resistance to vibrations and the impact for the carriage 3 and also improves the output of the motor 5. In addition, the number of magnetic disks 9 and the assembling area of a circuit substrate are increased since the carriage 3 does not move under the disk 9.
