PURPOSE:To increase output density and capacity and decrease the number of batteries and simplify the battery system in a fluid type sodium-sulfur battery by separating anode active material and cathode active material with bellows- shaped solid electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:Bellows-shaped beta'-alumina 3 is used as solid electrolyte which separates sulfur 2 serving as cathode active material and sodium 1 serving as anode active material. Sulfur 2 during discharge and sodium polysulfide 13 during charge are let to flow between the bellows-shaped beta'-alumina 3 and an electrode plate 4 inserted into a cathode matrix 9. Accordingly, the surface of the beta'-alumina 3 is effectively used as a reaction area. The lower part of the betabeta-alumina 3 is widened to enlarge flow area from the top to the bottom, and thereby, flow peeling off of sulfur 2 on the outer surface of the peak of the bellows is eliminated. By decreasing flow rate, peeling of is also prevented. |
