PURPOSE:To prevent deteriorations of contrast and erasion performance occurring at the time of driving an electrochromic display element, and to relieve scattering of its performance by adding ions of Cs, Al, Ni, and rare earth elements in the electrolyte to be used for the electrochromic display element. CONSTITUTION:Aq. soln. type electrolytes and nonaq. soln. type electrolytes are both used, and nonaq. electrolytes are mainly used in the element using soln. type electrolyte in order to extend the life of the display element during driving the element and its storage. Ions of Cs, Al, Ni, and rare earth elements function effectively when used together with the nonaq. type electrolytes, and compds. contg. these ions, typified by perchlorates of them, are added and dissolved in the nonaq. electrolytes, typified by propylene carbonate dissolving LiClO4 in a concn. of 1mol/l, and such an electrolyte is used, and in addition, various kinds of metal salts represented by M(BF4)n, n being the valence of the metal M, can be similarly used.
