<p>A method of producing a heat of steel by a process which includes the step of charging a steel making furnace with a first quantity of scrap metal and a second quantity of hot metal, includes the step of introducing into the steel making furnace (i) a selected quantity of a polymeric material having a sulfur content less than about 0.1 and preferably less than about 0.01 percent by weight, and (ii) an effective amount of exothermic metallic material which reacts exothermically with oxygen thereby to reduce the quantity of hot metal required to produce a heat of steel in the absence of the exothermic metallic material.</p> |
