PURPOSE:To lower the COD of an aqueous soln. of a quat. ammonium compound having an allyl group bonded to the N atom by electrolytically reducing the aqueous soln. at a proper pH to decompose quat. ammonium ions. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous soln. of a quat. ammonium compund having at least one allyl group bonded to the N atom such as trimethylallyl-ammonium halide is electrolytically reduced at 2-13pH, preferably about 6-11pH to decomposed quat. ammonium ions. This method is applicable to a case where an aqueous soln. contg. 50mg/l-50g/l quat. ammonium compound such as waste water is electrolytically reduced to lower the COD. It is preferably that an inorg. salt such as soluble carbonate or hydrogencarbonate is added to the aqueous soln. to prevent a pH rise by the buffer action and to lower the electric resistance of the soln.
