PURPOSE:To raise the profitability of equipment by constituting a network for connecting a system and a location by using a coupling device which can output one or plural optical inputs as they are or branching them to an optional number of pieces. CONSTITUTION:An optical transmission network is constituted by coupling systems S1-Sm and locations L1-Ln by coupling devices KD11-KDnm. Each coupling device can output one or plural inputs as they are, and also when its inputs are plural, and when its input is one, that which collects necessary ones among them to one by time-division multiplex, and that which branches its input itself to an optional number of pieces can be outputted, respectively. That is to say, when plural switches in the coupling device are turned on or off as prescribed, each optical signal A1+A2+...An from the locations L1-Ln can all be transmitted as multiplexed signals A1+A2+...An to all the systems S1-Sm. Also, a path to optional locations L1-Ln from each system S1-Sm of the reverse direction can also be constituted in the same way.
