A method for determining an optimum slip value lambda on at least one wheel of a vehicle is described, in order to permit optimum control of the brake force. For this purpose, at least the wheel speed is measured and the vehicle speed determined. By varying the brake pressure and the slip whilst travelling, signal combinations for the wheel speed, the vehicle speed, the brake pressure and the normal force are calculated and inserted into a given function VR(K + 1). The coefficients alpha n can then be determined for the resulting system of equations, from which coefficients the coefficients an of a general description of the mu -slip curve can then be determined. The mu -slip curve and its maximum is defined by these coefficients an. From this, the respective optimum slip lambda can be determined.
