<p>Title cpds. are prepd. by reaction of polycarboxylic acids contg. at least one carbocyclic ring and at least two carboxyl gps. capable of forming an intramolecular anhydride, with epichlorohydrin or its beta-methyl deriv. in pres. of a catalyst so as to form the corresp. chlorohydrin ester, followed by dehydrohalogenation to yield the (beta-methyl)glycidic ester. Specif. the polycarboxylic acid is formed in situ by hydrolysis of the corresp. cyclic anhydride in the reaction mixture in pres. of H2O and the (beta-methyl)chlorohydrin and the amount of catalyst and the moment at which it is added are chosen so that the hydrolysis of the anhydride is nearly complete before reaction of the acid formed to form the chlorohydrin ester is completely finished. Products are used as esterifying agents for prepn. of polyesters e.g. in the lacquer industry, and can be used with usual hardening agents for epoxy resins to form useful infusible and insoluble products.</p> |
