The arrangement of the various hollow cylinders (1, 3, 11) in the stated manner results in a reaction chamber (4), a degasification chamber (16) and a sedimentation chamber (14). The sludge which is deposited in the collecting chamber (2) and which contains the biomass is recycled because of the ejecting action of the untreated water entering in the inflow cross-section (6). The degasification chamber (16) is formed by the surface of the intermediate cylinder (11) and the difference in height of the upper edges (12, 13). The reaction vessel thus combines in a straightforward and space-saving manner the breakdown of the constituents, the separation of gaseous, liquid and solid phases and the recycling of the biomass contained in the sludge to the reaction region. <IMAGE>
