The apparatus 28 comprises a stationary chamber 32, an open end 48 of which faces the felt. A number of mutually spaced ribs 50 are in contact with the posterior face of this felt. Air originating from the said chamber can pass through the felt with minimum possible impedance by the said ribs 50. Members 58, 60 provide sealing between the felt and the peripheral edges of the open end 48. A means 44 ensures the entry of air substantially in the radial direction of the felt in order to free the latter from its dirt and its water.
