A first motor/generator (1) converts the mechanical energy from an i.e. engine into electrical energy driving a second motor/generator (2) which acts as a traction motor, during the acceleration of the vehicle. During deceleration or braking of the vehicle the second motor/generator (2) behaves as a generator, converting the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy which in turn drives the first motor/ generator (1) to rotate a flywheel accumulator (18). During subsequent acceleration, energy generated by the first motor/generator (1) as a result of the flywheel's rotation is used to drive the second motor/generator (2) in traction motor mode. The system also includes a receiver using IR or ultrasound (19) for receiving and processing traffic signal and related information which is applied to control or limit the operator-control of the vehicle in accordance with that information and a transmitter (20) for retransmitting relevant received information to other road traffic as well as information regarding the speed of the controlled vehicle.
