摘要

1-Methyl 3-ethyl 3-(3-hydroxy phenyl) hexahydro-azepine of formula (I) is obtained by (a) cyclising N-(3-methoxy carbonyl propyl) N-methyl 3-ethoxyphenyl acetamide (II) with a condensing agent, e.g. an alkaline alkoxide or hydride to obtain 1-methyl 3-(3-ethoxy phenyl) 2,4-diketo hexahydro-azepine (III); (b) alkylating (III) with an alkyl halide in aq. KOH soln. to obtain the 3-ethyl deriv. (IV); and (c) reducing (IV) with K borohydride. The reactions are carried out in presence of solvent e.g. dichloroethane, CHCl3 or CH3Cl.
