Pipeline fault status monitoring system.

Transmitters (16A, 16B ...) are arranged at intervals along the pipe line (10) to detect leaks by the effect of oil on an associated fibre optic loop (18A, 18B ....) The transmitters are coupled to a central station 20 by a common cable (14) and send asynchronous coded messages identifying their position and the fault status of the associated section of pipeline. Power is supplied to cable (14) by source (22) and the messages received at receiver (24) are decoded and analyzed and fault messages passed to printer/alarm (30).
