System for automatically establishing and controlling image display intensity of CRT-displayed computerized images in response to variations in ambient lighting, including a CRT for computerized display of radiologic images, the ambient lighting tending to degrade the CRT display, interfere with the interpretation of radiologic images, or require adjustment of the display intensity. Photosensor (24) arrangement with spectral filter (28) is carried by the CRT envelope (26) such that light from internally of the CRT resulting from the ambient lighting is received by the photocell through the filter. A photosensor-responsive control circuit (47) controls the average level of CRT image display intensity (40) as a function of the level of ambient illumination received by the photocell to compensate for variations in luminance performance and ambient light tending to interfere with the fidelity or facility of displayed image interpretation of computerized static images displayed by the CRT.
