PURPOSE:To prepare efficiently the titled compound, by selectively alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a crystalline borosilicic acid supporting an element of Group IIIb in the periodic table or a compound thereof or exchanging the ion with the ion of the element as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene or toluene, is alkylated with an alkylating agent, e.g. a methylating agent, in the presence of an element of Group IIIb in the periodic table, e.g. yttrium, scandium or rare earth element, preferably lanthanide, particularly lanthanum or neodymium, directly or supported in the form of a compound, particularly oxide after firing or the ion of the element introduced into a crystalline borosilicic acid by ion exchange as a catalyst to give an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. p-xylene or p- ethyltoluene. EFFECT:The conversion of the raw material compound is high, and the aimed compound can be obtained in high selectivity. The catalyst has a long life and is highly active. |
