In order to provide sheet-like objects, for example panels, boards, housing parts and the like, from strip-shaped profile elements consisting of metal, in particular aluminium and its alloys, each profile element has, on one longitudinal edge, a tongue and, on its other longitudinal edge, a groove in order to assemble a plurality of profile elements. In order to achieve a non-releasable connection position of these profile elements which have been assembled to form a sheet-like structure, the longitudinal edge, provided with the tongue, of each profile element has an angle strip which is arranged at a distance from the tongue, projects to the inner side and into which there can be plugged a web strip which is in connection with the groove of the attached profile element and by means of which, by the deformation thereof via clamping surfaces, the assembly of groove and tongue in the abutment region of adjoining profile elements is secured.
