In a system with a central unit (CEA) and one or more external units (CEB1-CEBn) which are interconnected via a two-wire line (L1, L2), a dialog is carried out between the units by sensing changes in the current (IL) in one direction and changes in the voltage (VL) in the other direction on the two-wire line (L1, L2). Digital current and voltage changes can also be superimposed on analog current and voltage changes.
