PURPOSE:To obtain easily the titled compound having a wide range of uses such as a solvent in organic synthetic reactions, by catalytically reducing 2- imidazolidinone and formaldehyde in the presence of a specific solid acid using a hydrogenation catalyst under mild reaction conditions without requiring any anticorrosive equipment. CONSTITUTION:Sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or aluminum or ammonium salt thereof is dissolved in water to give an aqueous solution containing either sulfuric acid ions only or both sulfuric acid ions and phosphoric acid ions. Alumina is added and mixed thoroughly with the solution, and the resultant mixture is dried and fired preferably at 500-900 deg.C to prepare a solid acid. 2-Imidazolidinone and form aldehyde or paraformaldehyde are catalytically reduced in the presence of the resultant solid acid using a hydrogenation catalyst, preferably obtained from palladium, nickel, platinum, etc. to obtain the aimed compound. The ratio of atoms constituting the solid acid is 0.01-0.06 (S/Al) in the case of for example sulfuric acid ions and alumina. |
