A method is described for the physical and/or chemical influencing and/or treatment of stacked or piled material by means of flowing media, such as liquids, air, gas or gas mixtures in a treatment chamber, in which the flowing medium is circulated in two treatment flows, which are directed towards one another and meet one another, in such a manner that the region in which the media meet one another moves to and fro in the transverse direction of the chamber. This known method is to be applied to processes in which the treatment or influencing takes place with heating and cooling of the material with a holding time of any length between heating and cooling or holding periods of any length between heating and cooling, it being possible to control rates and duration of the heating and holding periods as required and as accurately as possible without great heat losses having to be accepted. This is achieved by heat being supplied or extracted in a controlled manner outside the treatment chamber with circulated treatment flows.
